Interpretation
The Son (Diminish) Hexagram has Kan (Mountain) in the upper trigram and Tae (Lake) in the lower trigram. Kan represents a mountain, and Tae represents a lake. The image of the Son hexagram is a lake beneath a mountain. When the lake is beneath the mountain, the mountain appears even higher, and the lake, by lowering itself, enhances the grandeur of the mountain. Son means to diminish or to give up.
In the commentary, it is said that Bu means the old character for "captivity" or "prisoner," and Ga is similar to "to give" or "to bestow." Gal refers to offering a sacrifice, and Gwe is a round vessel for holding food. Hyang means to perform a ritual or sacrifice.
It is said that when capturing prisoners, offering them as sacrifices in a ritual is greatly auspicious and free of faults. If there is a place to go, it is beneficial. One can also give food for the ritual.
The hexagram suggests that now is a time to diminish oneself and offer to others. Like the lake lowering itself beneath the mountain to elevate the mountain’s grandeur, sacrificing for others will lead to great rewards. When you sacrifice for others, the benefits will return to you even greater.
Spending money for others or investing externally will bring greater profits, leading to great success without error. If the husband and wife are considerate of each other and make sacrifices for the sake of the family, harmony will prevail, and everything will proceed smoothly.
The hexagram indicates that it is a good time to act on questions, as the sacrifice and selflessness will bring positive outcomes.
初九 巳事遄往,无咎,酌損之
Initial Nine: The event is quick, no fault, it is advisable to make small adjustments.
The character "Person" is borrowed to mean sacrifice. "cloth" refers to speed, "Genus" means small, "Goryeo" refers to consideration, and "Hand" refers to removing. When performing ancestor rites, it must be done quickly and accurately to avoid fault, and the offerings can be measured and reduced if needed.
九二 利貞.征凶.弗損,益之
Nine Two: It is beneficial to remain firm. If you march, there will be danger. Do not diminish, but increase.
The character "fire" means not, and "Hand" refers to removal. The situation described involves an offering ceremony where the product should be increased, not diminished. The person drawing this hexagram is in a situation where they are dealing with a matter that requires a careful and generous approach. The work they are asking about will be successful if handled properly.
六三 三人行則損一人,一人行則得其友.
Six Three: When three people walk together, one is lost. When walking alone, you gain a friend.
When three people go to offer sacrifices together, their opinions will differ, and one person will be left behind. However, if one person goes alone, they will encounter a companion and gain a friend. The person asking about the hexagram is in a situation where a group of three people will have a division, and one will be left behind, while going alone will bring them a new companion. Pursuing a task with a group can lead to division, but pursuing it alone will attract like-minded individuals.
六四 損其疾,使遄有喜,无咎
Six Four: Reducing sickness brings joy quickly, no fault.
The problem at hand will soon be resolved through swift action. The task will be free of fault.
